People who are into illustration always say that purely decorative pieces are bad. At least that is what I hear quite often from people who teach, study, or collect illustrative art. I don't think so. I think purely decorative drawings / paintings / prints can be good, too. They can be part of design as a discipline which is open to everyone. There is no need for a big and heavy message behind the drawing, you don't have to be an expert in art history or literature to understand what the piece is telling. It can transmit a feeling and a piece of what is called Zeitgeschmack in German. It might just be a little fragment of what the contemporary taste is like. The piece might be about colours, a certain style of lines or textures or just an experiment for the artist her/himself. I know there is many bad decorative stuff, especially when looking around the web. However, I am not ashamed to say I like these light and easy-to-digest works. From time to time.
